The Zebra’s Secret Scent

For years, it was believed that zebras escaped tsetse flies because their stripes made them invisible. But groundbreaking PhD research at the University of Pretoria by Dr. Olabimpe Claide (supervised by Professor Christian Pirk) found that zebra skin produces a smell that repels the flies. The tsetse flies run from the zebras, not the other way around — rewriting decades of wildlife textbooks.

Wild Dogs: A Royal Succession

Kruger’s wild dogs have stunned biologists. In one pack, a father and daughter formed a new breeding pair after the daughter displaced her mother as alpha female — the only known case of a subordinate replacing a dominant breeding bitch. Alpha females can hold their position for up to 8.5 years, while alpha males last 1‑8 years. Young males sometimes replace their fathers, who then stay on as helpful subordinates. In 10 recorded challenges to an alpha male, the challenger succeeded 7 times.

Elephants Return

When James Stevenson-Hamilton became Kruger’s first warden in 1902, he found no elephants — they had been hunted out. By 1909, a herd of 25 had migrated down from Mozambique, laying the foundation for today’s thriving population.
